We have received a number of requests for information about the family
Shabbat discussion guides that the BJE of Greater New York produces and
distributes during the school year. Here's the information:

Around the Shabbat Table is a program of the Board of Jewish Education of
Greater New York that encourages families to turn Friday night into family
discussion night.
During the course of the year twenty ready-to-use discussion starters are
e-mailed to participating families and interested teachers and
principals. These materials are written with students in grades 7 - 10 in
mind, although they can be used by any family. The packets are
transideological in nature, written by educators and rabbis from a variety
of backgrounds and viewpoints.
Each packet includes a brief summary of the coming parashah or holiday, a
contemporary issue addressed by the parashah or holiday, discussion
questions, and some suggested resources. Families are encouraged to use
these discussion starters as a means of engaging in meaningful dialogue
around issues of values and ethics, such as honesty, conflict resolution,
self-esteem and more.
Schools can sign their families up by sending their e-mail lists to Rabbi
Arnold D. Samlan of the BJE Nassau/Queens Center (lists are used solely for
distribution of these materials), 179 Westbury Avenue, Carle Place,
NY 11514, [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Individuals (including teachers, principals, librarians) can sign up
directly through the BJE website,
http://lists.bjeny.org/scripts/wa.exe?SUBED1=shabbat_table&A=1
There is no fee for the program.
For further information contact Rabbi Samlan, [EMAIL PROTECTED] , 516-876-6535.

If the listserve allows me, I will attach a sign-up form that can be used
by schools and synagogue interested in the program.
Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Arnold D. Samlan
Director of Nassau/Queens Services
Board of Jewish Education of Greater New York
