Just to clarify, I agree with Linda Silver that James Howe' Kaddish for Grandpa.... is absolutely unacceptable in any Jewish Library for many reasons but particularly because of the very syncretism Eli Wise seems to be referring to when he speaks about assimilation.
When the editor sent me unbound galleys last year I correspondended with her and with Howe. Among other things, I learned that the author, however well-intentioned, has no understanding that using the word "kaddish" in the very same phrase as "Jesus" makes everyone I've shown it actually gasp.
