Dear Colleagues, In the process of reviewing our holdings I found a book titled "Mr. Smith and Mr. Schmidt: A Story in Pictures." The author is Ben Martin. It was published in 1940 by Vanguard Press (NY). Using simple cartoon-like drawings and minimal text the book compares the life of Mr. Smith, a citizen of a democracy, with that of Mr. Schmidt, living under an unnamed dictator who looks at lot like Hitler. The book ends by suggesting that the latter leave the former alone, as Mr. Smith has beaten Mr. Schmidt before and can do it again.
I think this is a remarkable piece of pre WWII propaganda (?). I showed it to the Special Collections librarian at Wichita State University and he agreed that it should be in an academic or research library rather than a small Temple library. I would like to offer it to members of the Hasafran list. If you feel it would fit your holdings, please contact me offlist. Thank you. Ellie Shore Librarian (volunteer) Elsie R.
