Washburn University seeks a knowledgeable and innovative leader who has a
thorough understanding of the evolving role of libraries in contemporary
higher education and a strong public services background. The Assistant
Director will provide administrative oversight for the newly created Public
Services division and direct the development, implementation and marketing
of new and existing programs to provide user-centered services.  We seek a
highly motivated and creative librarian who will take a leadership role and
will be a catalyst for new initiatives.  The successful candidate will
become a member of the library administrative group, sharing responsibility
for the overall direction of the University library system with other key
managers including the Assistant Director for Technical Services and the
Coordinator for Collection Development and Management.  This position
reports directly to the Dean of University Library.  With a staff of 21 and
an operating budget of $1.6 million, the library system includes Mabee
Library and the Curriculum Resources Center (CRC) with collections of
340,000 printed volumes, 1500 current periodical titles, special
collections, and electronic offerings.  Washburn University is a
comprehensive university with an enrollment of 7000 and faculty of 250.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

� Provide vision, direction and operational management for the planning,
development, marketing, delivery and assessment
      of all user services functions, including reference, instruction,
circulation, course reserves and interlibrary loan.
� Supervise, train and evaluate one instruction librarian, one public
services librarian, one circulation manager and one
      interlibrary loan assistant.
� Supervise, train and evaluate personnel involved in the provision of
reference and instruction.
� Coordinate public services activities and workflow with other functional
areas of the library and university.
� Play an active role in the assessment of library services and resources.
� Identify, evaluate and promote new technologies in user services.
� Participate in library-wide programs such as collection development,
assessment, and strategic planning.
� Take a leadership role, locally and nationally, in identifying and
implementing new developments in the field through
      active participation in professional organizations.

REQUIREMENTS:
� ALA-accredited MLS.
� Understanding of public services functions, best practices/current trends
in the provision of information services in
      an academic environment.
� At least three years of professional experience in public services,
reference and instruction.
� Excellent interpersonal, analytical, written and oral communication
skills.
� Evidence of successful supervision and mentoring of librarians and staff.
� Solid record of working well with all levels of library personnel as well
as university faculty and students.
� Ability to view issues from broad, library-wide perspectives.
� Record of dealing successfully with organizational change.

PREFERRED:
� Experience with assessment of library services.
� Experience in other areas of public services such as circulation and
interlibrary loan.
� Experience with public service application of new and emerging
technologies.
� Experience in project management.
� Successful experience analyzing information and preparing written reports.
� Second advanced degree.
