It is difficult to imagine a Jewish Library without this soon-to-be-classic Jewish reference.
MATURE TEENS - ADULT Non-fiction Rosin, Josef, "Preserving Our Litvak Heritage...A History of 31 Jewish Communities in Lithuania" Published by JewishGen.Inc. League City, Texas 77573 Dist. by www.jewishgenmall.org ISBN 0-9764759-0-1, LCCN 2005920980 (hard cover: 738 pages, alk.paper). Millions, perhaps the majority, of Ashkenazic Jews in the world trace a branch of their ancestry to Lithuania. Here we have, for the very first time, an encyclopedic collection of archival material, public records, personal memoirs and more than 500 photographs, in this 738 page book by Josef Rosin. It is a detailed history of 31 Lithuanian [Litvak] Jewish communities. It is a testament to the cultural richness, town personalities, welfare institutions and educational system which contributed to once vibrant communities almost totally destroyed at the hands of the Nazis. For the many researchers who have not yet learned their place of ancestral Litvak origins, this book may well provide that important clue. With an introduction by one of the preeminent contemporary international scholars of the history of Eastern European Jewish Communities, Professor Dov Levin, this book has exceptional value. For every person with Litvak heritage, for almost every Jew of European ancestry, it is nothing less than a personal treasure. For historians, Rosin's research provides a valuable central compilation of information previously obtainable only from numerous, diverse sources, many in private holdings. Josef Rosin has provided another invaluable glimpse into the resonant everyday life of European Jews in the days before the German genocide. It provides an important insight into the personal and cultural life of those most closely affected by the Holocaust.
