The Jewish Community Library of Los Angeles facilitated a summer film group a few summers ago. The Library jump started the group by advertising in the local Jewish press, the dates times and titles of films to be viewed. and the fact that it was free. It was a remarkable series because for each film screened a random person who saw what the film was called me ahead of time and said something like the following: for The Front: "I am planning to attend the evening, I was a blacklisted writer, may I introduce the movie." for The Port of Last Resort: "My parents grew up in Shanghai.May I introduce the movie and talk about Jewish life in Shanghai and share some photos?" For every one person who called the Library to ask to be a part of the program, there were at least 5 more people in the audience who were closely connected to the theme or subject of the film. AND Jewish Heritage Video Collection: If you or a nearby institution own the Jewish Heritage Video Collection, that wonderful resource comes with a series of notebooks that are organized by themes and topics and suggest viewing and discussion of particular movies within the collection. If you are interested in this and a JHVC does not exist close to you the Jewish Community Library of Los Angeles would be delighted to work with you and loan you materials for this type of film group.
