I also like Aviva's idea of varying the convention every few years.
I do not believe that the cost of CAJE is evidence that having our
convention on a college campus is not less expensive. Comparing CAJE to
AJL is like comparing apples to oranges. CAJE is a much larger
organization than ours. Their convention is much larger than ours. They
have a 16 member professional staff who work in an office in midtown
Manhattan. Running their organization costs a minimum of a million dollars
annually. A million dollars must come from somewhere, right? It comes
from dues and convention fees. The reason CAJE has their conventions on
college campus is because it allows the membership to spend less money on
lodging so that they can spend more money on keeping CAJE in operation. I
think that the best thing to do would be to ask the convention coordinator
at CAJE for details about what is involved both financially and
logistically with holding a convention on a college campus.
