Dear Ted, <<Otherwise we're a nice friendly club with a couple of hard working leaders that gets together from time to time and schmmozes. My opinions only.>>
I think you are right to the point. It is my feeling too. However [on pessimistic note] do not deceit yourself and the entire membership (about 80% of which are part time workers of sorts) that we ever will "be compensated and treated as professionals" and the employers will pay to attend AJL and other conventions, with the exception of some academic libraries which offer to very limited group of their librarians conditions equal to those of the teaching faculty. I am working in the field of Judaica librarianship some 40 years (since August 1965), always in academic setting, and I never saw a possibility of the situation like one you encourage to attain, aside from occasional benefaction of the board members or private benefactors impressed with the excellence of a particular librarian. College campus location seems to me very practical solution for future conventions. In every decision there are always pros and contras. However if the organizing committee is a thoughtful body, most of contra factors could be eliminated. My best wishes to all AJL members. Hayim Sheynin ========================== Dr. Hayim Y.
