Subject: [ha-Safran]: A book you should stock

Overcoming the aftermath of terrorism

Given what transpired in London on July 6th-7th, 2005, this is a book for
readers who want hope as well as history.

Hannelore Heinemann Headley's "Blond China Doll: A Shanghai Interlude
1939-1953," is a warm, thought-provoking story of family survival, an
unforgettable saga of keeping hope and faith alive in terrified children; a
book for its time, which is today.

The title refers to the awe with which the Chinese greeted the blond child
after her parents fled Nazi Germany for shelter in Shanghai, a refuge that
turned hostile when her father was arrested as a spy and imprisoned for 14
months. Hannah faced a firing squad when authorities refused to believe she
could not answer questions about Papa Heinemann's activities.

It is a touching, breath-taking story and fast-paced work of literature, as
well as the tender autobiography of a child, then teenager, whose parents
braved great odds to save their family. Riveting are accounts of
Kristallnacht, the narrow escape to China, and the subsequent years in the
Jewish Ghetto of Hongkew under Japanese rule. Hannah's family eventually
emigrated to Vancouver, where she opened her first book shop to become
Canada's youngest independent book seller.

Hannah carries on with her father's bookselling tradition and owns two of
Ontario's few emporiums of rare and out-of-print books. Although legally
blind, she is writing her second memoir, this book about life in Canada, and
works daily as a bookseller.

Again, please visit her website and consider acquiring her book.
