The current issue of the Canadian Jewish News (Montreal edition) has an
article about a promising digitization project. The full article is
available at: http://www.cjnews.com/viewarticle.asp?id=7006. Here are the
first few paragraphs:

>Adler and Chronicle to be digitized by JPL
>
>By JANICE ARNOLD
>Staff Reporter
>
>Two of the oldest Jewish periodicals in Canada are about to receive a new
>life using the latest technology.
>
>The Kanader Adler, a Yiddish daily founded in Montreal in 1907, and the
>Canadian Jewish Chronicle, an English weekly launched in 1914, also out of
>Montreal, are to be digitized by the Jewish Public Library (JPL) in a
>fully-searchable facsimile format.
>
>Issues from the 1920s and '30s will be the first to go online because this
>formative and turbulent period is of particular interest to researchers,
>said JPL archivist Shannon Hodge.
>
>At the same time, the JPL is also going to digitize issues of Le Goglu
>(1929-33), one of Quebec fascist Adrien Arcand's anti-Semitic
>publications, because of its related interest.
>
>If sufficient funding is found, the papers will go online in the fall of
>2006, free of charge. Eventually, the JPL wants to digitize the entire run
>of Adler and Chronicle, which ceased publication in the 1970s.
>
>The scanning will be done from the master microfilms. The JPL holds the
>master reels for the Chronicle, and the New York Public Library has agreed
>to lend its master of the Adler for this project.
