I believe the phrase originates with Islam. The Jews received a book - the Torah. The Christians received a book - the gospel. (David also received a book - the Psalms.) However, according to Islam, Jews and Christians corrupted their "books" --i.e. their scripture; hence Muhammed was sent as the final prophet to set things right--the Koran. According to Islam, the Biblical prophets were really Muslims. As for the People of the Book, they are to be fought until they submit to Islamic rule. (Koran 9:29) Andrea
