Hi all, I was referred to this list by Diane Romm, who was wondering whether Koha (http://koha.org), the first open-source integrated library system, supports use of Hebrew characters for searching and display. Indeed it does:
http://opac.liblime.com/cgi-bin/koha/opac-detail.pl?bib=23787 In fact, if you take a look at the MARC View for that record you'll observe a technique that can be used for cataloging your records so that Koha can not only find them by performing a character search, but also by using the latin transliteration of the Hebrew characters. (hint: check the 945 tag; Koha can be set up to 'link' tags so it finds values from both tags when performing searches). The first issue of the LibLime newsletter (http://liblime.com/newsletter) will describe this technique in detail. Koha, as you may know, is an open-source autmation system, and as such is freely available for download and use. For libraries who would like support services on Koha, there are several companies around the world, including my company, LibLime, that offer a wide range of services including: hosting, installation, data migration, customization, staff training, software maintenance, and support. If you'd like to demo how Koha would work for you, please try the LibLime demos: Staff: http://koha.liblime.com Public OPAC: http://opac.liblim.com Feel free to catalog new items, add borrowers, check-out items, add new branches, etc (especially if in Hebrew :-)). One way to improve Hebrew support in Koha would be to develop a set of Hebrew Templates. Of primary consideration would be the need for a right-to-left orientation to ease readability. If anyone is interested in sponsoring Hebrew templates, or has any other ideas / questions about Koha, don't hesitate to let me know.
