The Irascible Historian

New Light on the personality of the Sixteenth Century Chronicler Joseph
Ha-Kohen from his personal Correspondence,

Edited with notes and an introduction by Abraham David, Jerusalem, Beit
David, 2004, 106 pages. $20.00 (including postage).

These letters of the famous historian Joseph Ha-kohen, author of 'Emek
Ha-Bakhah, cover only a short span of his life, some fifteen years in the
mid 16nth century. Nonetheless, they disclose much of his inner world.
Joseph Ha-Kohen's life was filled with pain and anguish. Within the span of
10 years he buried three of his sons, along with other close relatives,
after as he suffered exile from his home-town of Genoa, sending him on an
itinerant path across northern Italy.
His bitter and restless experiences must have influenced his fiery and
irascible manner in his interpersonal relationships. He appears to be
temperate, and easily upset when his letters are not answered in time. He
bore a grudge against his rivals, even those who were closely related to
him, like his sister Clara and brother Todros. He spare no words even to
the most respected sages of his time, such as R. Meir Katznelbogen (Maharam
Padova).
We find here, substantial background for understanding the
personality of the historian, within the context of his experiences and
social position, that are likely to have influenced his historiographic view.

Dr. Abraham David, has been an Historian and Senior Researcher at the
Jewish National and University Library in Jerusalem for over thirty
five years.
His primary field of research is Hebrew Manuscripts of the middle ages. His
expertise is in the Jewish Historiography and the early Jewish
re-settlement of the Land of Israel in the Mameluke and early Ottoman
periods. He has published books and numerous articles on this topic,
including the publication of documents and chronicles of the era.
