I run a small synagogue library. My committee is made up entirely of
volunteers, including myself, and none of us yet have any formal
education with respect to our roles in the library. Local synagogue
librarians have been gracious enough to assist us with tasks that
must be accomplished, one of which is cataloging. My cataloger asked
me yesterday to solicit your suggestions for cataloging a non-Judaica
title (Robert's Rules of Order) into our library which uses the
Elazar classification system.

We discussed simply placing it in an accessible place without
cataloging it but both of us feel that would unproductive as the
library is generally not staffed and those who might wish to
reference it would likely be unable to locate it. The other concern
with that idea is that people would not replace it back where it
belongs since would not have its own shelf spot and then when others
go to look for the book, it is not where it should be. We believe we
want to place it in the reference section so that it will not be
taken from the library, but would be available for when the Board of
Trustees Parliamentarian or other committee members might need to
reference it. The other benefit to cataloging it is that it will
obviously be tied back to our library with the name stamped in as
well as the cataloging label on the spine.

Thank you in advance for your input.

Sincerely,
Andrea Gillin
