Eli Wise said: "When the school in Montreal was firebombed with a note
indicating vengeance it was also virtually unnoticed". I don't know
where he's getting this information, but my recollection of the event
is quite different. The local municipality authorities took it quite
seriously and the provincial government was equally concerned - the
Premier, Jean Charest, toured the ruined library three days after it
was firebombed. At the national level, then Prime Minister Paul
Martin condemned the act the very day after it happened.
The note specifying that the act was in retaliation for Israel's
killing Sheik Yassin, the Hamas leader, was widely publicised
immediately after the firebombing. Musilm groups, such as CAIR-CAN
(the Canadian Council on American-Islamic Relations) condemned it as
"a shameful act of violence and hate", saying "there is absolutely no
justification whatsoever for
this hate crime", the day after it happened.
There is no doubt, however, that vigilance and security thinking is
called for. I think a session along the lines Eli proposed for the
next conference is an excellent idea.
