Dear Friends,

May we come out of these difficult times safer and stronger.

I have just seen the work, ‘the Fire and the Light,’ by Herman Kahan. It is one of those moving holocaust memoires that provide important historical detail of the ghetto of Maramoros, Sighet, Transylvania, 1944 and the deportation, torture and extermination of that and surrounding Romanian/Hungarian Jewish communities. He describes much detail of that time as well as Jewish life before the holocaust and the travails of reconstructing his life in Europe and ultimately <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Norway. Much important post – war history can be learned. Important figures play roles in this history including R’ Weiss – Halivny, who later became a Columia University professor and the parallel histories of the author’s many friends and even the Teitelbaum (rabbinic dynasty.) The book includes some important Jewish, ‘holocaust’ theology and midrash. The catch is that the book is a translation of his autobiography published in Norway 1999. I believe that shouldn’t matter and this book should get wide distribution. Cat. #58744, $22.00

Meir Havatzelet and Yossef Tubi, well known scholars, have edited and translated a 15th Cent. Yemenite manuscript entitled, ‘Sho’el u-Meshiv,’ a midrashic allegorical commentary on Torah and Haftora. This work which will be of interest to Jewish Studies scholars for decades to come, is published by Afikim, Tel Aviv 2006, Cat. #60684 $20.50

Also in the area of Sifrei Kodesh – Rabbinics, please note, ‘Eretz Ha-Moriah,’ on Bible, Biblical Hebrew, linguistics and Jewish Theology, by Yehiel Bin Nun. The work is significant, scholarly and a “must have.” Cat. #60671, $28.00

We have also recently acquired new material from Raphael Kohen, who as some of you know is a self publisher of Mystical, Kabbalistic material from manuscripts.

While their have been many criticisms of the expense of the material and the typographical errors (in the 1-2 page English abstracts), we have found that there has been consistent scholarly interest in his work. The most frustrating of all have been his plethora of photocopied, crudely bound works around 20 pages, selling from aprox. $30-40-!!

Unlike his other works, Raphael Kohen has published ‘Psalms with commentary according to the Kabbala,’ and includes the commentary of over 10 Kabbalistic Sages, including, among others, R’Avraham ben Samuel Abulafia, R’ Yehoshua bar Shmuel Nahmias, R’ Simon ben Zemah Duran. This Hebrew work hardcover, is over 200 pages, and has the collection of commentaries as footnotes to the text. The Hebrew title is Tehilim im Perush Le'Or ha-Kabbalah. Cat.#60578 $78.00

They are entitled, “Rabbi Solomon ben Israel Peretz Commentary on the Holidays halakhic reasons according to Rabbi Joseph Caro book Shulkhan Arokh….,” isbn 965-7331-05-6 (our price $ 99.-) - R' Shelomoh (Saliman) Ben Yisrael Perets Perush Ta'amei Halachot Hagim al Shulhan Arukh. Cat.#60576 and the other volume is entitled, “Rabbi Solomon ben Israel Peretz Commentary on the Slaughter Halakhic reasons…” isbn 965 -7331- 0408. R' Shelomoh (Saliman) Ben Yisrael Perets Perush Ta'amei Halachot Shitah al Shulhan Arukh le-R' Yosef Karo. Cat.#60577 $130.00

The works are from a previously unpublished (19th Cent.) manuscript by R’ Sliman a sage of Morocco, and Rabbinic Judge who emigrated to Israel and lived in Tiberius until his death in 1976. The books contain a table of contents both in Hebrew and English and have footnotes as well as indices by subject, as well as references to other languages including arabic and a table of abbreviations. The scholarly treatment of these works, the commentary and analysis of R’ Caro, the references to coins, weights, the references to hosts of sages from the 12-19th centuries and extensive index of talmudic references make these works interesting, worthwhile and a source for future research.

And last of all, please note that all shipping issues are back to normal. No need to worry.

Sincerely,

Jeff
