Hi, I am looking for guidance, in terms of cataloging suggestions, collection development, borrowing and donation policies, etc., on a new project we are undertaking to create a small library at our upstate New York temple. We are in the beginning stages and are looking into receiving grants from the Federation to fund a notebook (computer), so that we can begin to catalog the existing collection, and to start soliciting donations, both money and materials, from the congregation. We need to get the following information in place so we can apply for the grant by Sept. 1: Should we use Weine, Elazar or Dewey? Do we purchase software for this through the Assoc. for Jewish Libraries, or do we just set this up in a Word program? Our collection will ultimately be about 5-10,000 volumes, but is several hundred volumes right now. What type of notebook (computer) with what type of hardware and software should we purchase? Do we need Hebrew-translation software, too?
What kind of acquisitions/collection development policy should we have? Should we accept prayer books? Periodicals? Should we reserve the right to refuse all donations? The right to sell donated materials? The right to accept only monetary donations for the first year? Can we have access to other libraries' MARC records for copy cataloging purposes? Where do we begin? We could certainly use some advise and guidance! Thanks.
