Hi everyone,
Author Julie Baer (I Only Like What I Like, Love Me Later – both AJL
Notable Books) sent me some info about a new book project she is
working on, a sort of children’s Holocaust memorial. She wants to
incorporate writing from real, live kids. Maybe you have students who
you’d like to involve in this project, or maybe you know other
librarians or teachers who would want to do it. The students’
writing could ultimately end up in the published book! Below is the
author’s description of her project, and if you’d like me to forward
her attachments to you of the book dummy, book proposal, etc., please
email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Or, if you’d like to talk directly to
author Julie Baer, you can email her at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

MESSAGE FROM AUTHOR JULIE BAER:

My book-in-progress is Faces of Friends: Children of Today Meet
Children of the Holocaust. This book introduces faces of children who
died in the Holocaust, as seen through the eyes and hands of a
contemporary painter and the eyes and minds of contemporary children.

I have a book proposal expressing in words my intention and vision
for the book, a mocked-up dummy (pdf) representing a visual sense,
and a rough historical appendix (word doc) for context (for which I
am seeking a professional historian to gather and organize accurate
historical data; I present this rough version of the Appendix simply
for a reader’s sense of context for the children’s writings).
Everything is preliminary: the voices of children printed on the
dummy are merely the earliest results of a classroom writing
assignment that I’ve developed; there will be more writings from
which to choose. I want the final collection of writings to display
a rich spectrum of responses - different ages and orientations, many
reflecting the child-writer himself as much as his view of the
Holocaust child. The design of the book is also in its earliest
stages. N.B. The order of the spreads on the dummy pdf is not
necessarily my choice; when I print out the dummy, I usually reorder the pages.

In addition to a historian for the Historical Appendix (possibly from
the Wiesenthal Center or the USHMM), my ideal would be for Facing
History and Ourselves to contribute an Afterword addressing the
educational application of this project. There will be a Foreword
written by the author Howard Schwartz, addressing the context.

An area in which you might help if you are interested: I need more
quality writing for the book and so if you know teachers who might be
interested in conducting the writing exercise in their classrooms,
please feel free to forward this email with attachments. I have an
informal writing exercise lesson plan, for this purpose. The faces
from which the writings spring can be found at

Best,
Julie Baer
