Dear Safranim, A visiting scholar at Penn, Prof. Rehav Rubin, this year has asked me to submit the following inquiry to you. If you can be of help to him, please contact him directly at the emails given below.
Many thanks for your help, Arthur To the members of Ha-Safran, Dear Colleagues, I am writing an essay about "Jewish maps" of the Land of Israel (and Jerusalem). I define "Jewish maps" as maps drawn within Jewish texts and published in Jewish contexts, as Bibles, Talmuds, commentaries, Halachic books etc. I am interested mainly in traditional rather than modern maps and in maps drawn before 1900. I already collected a lot of material but I would be grateful for any information about such maps, especially in rare books in any collection around the world. There are two specific maps that I have seen references to, and which I would be very glad to learn about, but could not locate any copies: 1. A map printed in 1784 by Jonathan ben Yaacov. A copy of this map was described by Yaari in Kiryat Sepher 1943, but its location is unknown. 2. A map that was published by Richietti, Joseph Shallit ben Eliezer, 17th cent. , who mentioned in his forward to his "Sefer Hokhmat ha-Mishkan", printed in Mantua in the 1575-6, that he himself had printed a map in Amsterdam. Any information will be highly appreciated.
