INTENSIVE BEGINNER COURSE IN YIDDISH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE
With a uniquely Canadian focus

May 3 – June 12, 2007, Ottawa, Canada

Course description
This highly intensive course provides a multifaceted introduction to 
Yiddish, with equal emphasis on reading, writing, and speaking.  The 
course features a strong cultural component that includes folklore, 
music, literature, film, and theatre.
The course is geared at anyone seeking to acquire a solid foundation 
in Yiddish, including university students, scholars, researchers, 
musicians, genealogists, and individuals with a personal interest.
The instructor is Rebecca Margolis of the Vered Jewish Canadian 
Studies Program.
No previous knowledge is required.  The course will be taught in 
English, with special accommodations for French-speaking participants.

Morning classes
Monday to Friday 9:30 am – 12:30 pm
The course covers the first half of Uriel Weinreich’s College 
Yiddish, as well as supplementary materials on Canadian literature 
and culture.

Enrichment activities
To complement the morning course, students will have the opportunity 
to participate in a variety of afternoon activities: workshops, 
films, presentations, and field trips.  The program will also offer 
occasional programs on evenings and Sundays.

Registration
The course consists of two 3-credit undergraduate classes: YDD 
1101-1102 (Introduction to the Yiddish Languages and Culture 1 & 2, 
Faculty of Arts, Dept. Modern Languages & Literatures).
Open to all University of Ottawa students.  Students registered at 
other universities may enrol with a letter of permission from their 
home universities.  The course is open to non-University students as 
Special Students.  Please note that auditors are not permitted.
For regular students, online registration opens on April 3, 
2007.  Special students should complete a registration form through 
Houria Messadh (see below) before April 18, 2007.
