Two good basic resources are Reference Guide to English Literature, 3 volumes (St. James Press) and Reference Guide to American Literature (also St. James Press). World Literature Criticism (6 volumes plus supplements) published by Gale has longer articles, and is pricier than the others.
Harold Bloom is the editor of numerous literary criticism titles, some devoted to topics (Elizabethan dramatists, short stories) and some to individual authors (published by Chelsea House). An enjoyable and informative guide to Shakespeare is The Friendly Shakespeare by Norrie Epstein (Viking Penguin). All of these titles have proven themselves valuable additions to our collection.
