Hebraic Section, AMED Division and the Hebrew Language Table of the Library of Congress, in cooperation with the Embassy of Israel Present:
GOLGATHA: A play written by Shmuel Refael Sephardic memories of the Holocaust: Lecture and selected readings (in English) Friday, April 20, 2007 - 12:00 Noon Mary Pickford Theater, James Madison Building, Library of Congress Dr. Shmuel Refael, Director, Center for Ladino Studies, Bar Ilan University, (playwright), Geula Jeffet Attar (director) and Victor Attar (actor) will take part in a panel discussion following the readings. Israeli actor, Victor Attar, playing Albert Salvado, a Greek Holocaust survivor, will read selectively from the play. Mr. Salvado relives the atrocities of the concentration camps as he prepares for his long awaited dream to come true - the honor to light the torch at the Holocaust commemoration ceremony at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. The estrangement many Judeo-Spanish speaking Jews felt is captured in the play through the inner-turmoil experienced by Albert in the isolation of his own, dark apartment where he has nothing but a photograph to remind him of the family he lost as the only survivor of his household. The play premiered at the Tzavta Theater in Tel Aviv and subsequently toured Israel (2003-2005). The English version was staged at LaMaMa Theater in New York. The playwright, Dr. Shmuel Refael, Director, Center for Ladino Studies, Bar Ilan University, will introduce the play. Following the readings, Dr. Refael, Geula Jeffet Attar (director) and Victor Attar will take part in a panel discussion of the play.
