Dear colleagues,

Due to the (mostly) disappointed responses I received so far, let me
clarify the constrains involved in arranging for the 2007 AJL Tour:

1. Any outdoor activity in the metro-Phoenix area during summer has
to be done in the early morning. By 10AM, it may well be around 110
Fahrenheit degrees. Believe me, you don't want to be outside for more
than 10 minutes in such weather; but either in an air-conditioned
space or in the water. That is why the tour moves on to the Heard
Museum around 9:30AM.

2. The convention program does not leave any other morning available
for the tour.

3. I am aware of the discomforts associated with staying at the hotel
during shabbat, as the tour starts very early Sunday morning.
However, I am sure that offering the tour on Thursday morning (6/21)
would have caused the same problems, making those interested stay an
additional night at the hotel, after the convention is officially over.

4. The desert is full of life at this time of the day. This is your
chance to watch birds, insects and mammals in their natural
environment. The Desert Botanical Garden was the most impressive
thing I encountered on my first visit to Arizona. I arranged for the
tour because the DBG is a must-see in my mind.

I hope that clarifies what may otherwise seem like strange choices. I
hope to see you in June - don't forget your hats, sunscreen and water bottles!
