After furious deliberation and consideration of 16 manuscripts sent
from around the world, the Sydney Taylor Manuscript Award Committee
has chosen the winner of this year's award. The winning manuscript,
entitled Getting Rid of Jeremy , is authored by Yael Mermelstein of
Beitar Illit, Israel. The story focuses on Randi, young girl who is
ashamed and embarrassed by her younger brother who has Down's
Syndrome. With the help of a new friend Shifra, Randi makes plans to
place her brother in an institutionn an attempt to win back her life.
The resolution is both heartwarming and uplifting. The Committee was
impressed by the quality of the writing, the vivid descriptions, and
the integration of the Jewish content into this original story. Ms
Mermelstein hopes to be at the conference to receive her award.
