Safranim, I am the new librarian at Adas Israel Congregation in Washington, DC. We have a library of 11,000 + books, etc.
Last year, the library began cataloging through "Destiny," from Follett (which, in all fairness, isn't as bad as I thought except, say, for today, when it's unreachable). However, they also continued putting book pockets and book cards in each book, in large part so that congregants, using congregant name cards, could check books out on Shabbos afternoon. I have proposed ending this total duplication of work and just living with barcodes. However, this would mean not allowing books to be taken out on Shabbat, and there is some resistance to this change of policy. It also means people can't self-check out books at other times during the week when no one is here. (I am part-time, and there is no other staff.) They would be able to check things out via the Religious School office, where there are staff many more, but still not all, hours. I would very much like to know, from synagogue libraries, what you do about Shabbat lending (and the other times), and from everyone, including synagogues, whether anyone continues to do book pockets and cards if you have switched to computer cataloging.
