Evi has made a proposal that has some merit: Supporting and sponsoring libraries in order to further the profession when the institutions are unable to do so.
While I'm in favor of discussing the idea, I think our organization itself should be our first priority. Several people hafe "kicked around" the idea of an AJL Endowment for a few years, but there is a baseline amount opf money to fund such a thing, and we don't have it. I'd be interested in knowing what other members opf the list have to say. I don't think it's entirely an "either/or" proposition. I agree fully that we should be supportive of institutions when they are under financial pressure, just as we do when they are under intellectual attack.
