The materials from the AJL-NYMA's Fall 2007 Conference, "Are You
Relevant: Lobbying for Librarians and Libraries," are now up on the
web. Coordinated by NYMA's new president, Leslie Monchar, the
conference touched on some of the topics that have come up for
discussion in recent days on Hasafran. Keynote speaker Joanne P.
Roukens, the New Jersey Library Association's Librarian of the Year,
gave a combination presentation/workshop on the topic "Valuing
Libraries: Demonstrating Your Library's Impact on Your Community."
This was followed by a focus group, led by Philip Monchar, Market
Researcher & Focus Group Moderator, and was composed of six
representative librarians from academic and school libraries in the
NYMA network. Focus group participants were asked a series of
questions by the moderator having to do with what their libraries
offer; what images do their libraries present to the public, to
administrators and to funders; and how to respond to funders who want
to cut the library's budget. The unrehearsed responses brought up
some very real, very timely issues.

To access the conference materials, go to www.ajlnyma.org, then go to
the "Past Events" page and select 2007-2008 from the drop-down list
under "Fall Conference." There you will find Ms. Roukens's PowerPoint
presentation as well as her handouts including a workbook and sample
worksheets. While on the AJL/NYMA web page, take the time to peruse
the site and see all the enhancements that webmaster Steve Bernstein
has added. Ongoing features include a listing of NYMA events, past
and present, with access to documentation from past events and to
full text citation of past issues of the chapter newsletter, NYMA
News. Recent innovations - an "Articles of Interest" section, a
"Photo Gallery" from recent NYMA events and extensive job listing for
the tri-state area. In addition, one can subscribe to an RSS feed for
up-to-the-minute information about positions as soon as they become available.
