Dear Safraniot and Safranim, A little over one year ago, I used my husband's connection to Hasafran to make an appeal for memories of Sukkot. I was collecting memories that would evoke a strong visual response. These memories would be included in a 2' x 4' panel that would decorate a community sukkah at the National Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, Massachusetts.
My panel, which I called "Encompassing Sukkot--Collected Memories" was chosen along with some 14 others. The Sukkot Festival was a lovely success. Many months later, I sent images of my art to the Director of Yeshiva University Museum in NYC. She picked the panel from among several pieces for an exhibition. And that's the wonderful story that some of you helped create. I will write to the individual respondents separately with more details. So thank you Safraniot and Safranim for your part in my success. Now I have another request. I am collecting memories about ironing...as in ironing shirts, sheets, handkerchiefs, etc. Who taught you? Did you ever learn? Do you never iron? Do you love it? Is it a meditative experience? Remember that first burnt effort? Tell me your stories; I am looking for visual reactions. Before I get to the ironing piece though, I will first continue my Women of the Balcony series (see my web site Selected works #1 and #2). I just got a grant from the Hadassah-Brandeis Institute to complete the project. I am very excited.
