Dear colleagues, After devoting most of my working life to the Jewish National and University Library, and following months of deliberation, I have taken the decision to retire. This has gone into effect from the beginning of this month and I am pleased to inform you that Rivka Shveiky, formerly head of the Legal Deposit Division has been appointed as the new Chief Librarian.
When I was appointed to this position myself some six years ago, it was clear to me that relations between the JNUL and the AJL should be strengthened and that that American Judaica librarians wcould benefit from increased awareness of the resources and services that the JNUL has to offer, Since then we have made every effort to send a different member of staff to the annual AJL conference to present various aspects of the JNUL's work. This trend will undoubtedly continue in the years to come. The promotion of close cooperation with the Jewish library world everywhere is one of the stated goals in the National Library Law recently passed in the Knesset. The JNUL is to assume its official status in the coming weeks and hopefully we will see new possibilities for initiatives for collaborative projects and mutual assistance. On this optimistic note, I bid you farewell. I was priveleged to meet many of you personally and to correspond with others, and wish you continued success in meeting the many challenges facing librarianship in general and Judaica librarianship in particular.
