What comes to mind immediately is the series "My First Parsha Reader," but they're for younger children. However, "The Little Midrash Says" series, and The Family Midrash Says" series are appropriate for older children and families. They include a telling of the Weekly Torah reading. These are all available from Bnay Yakov Publications (1742 East 7th Street, Brooklyn, New York 11223; phone 718-376-5903.)
The complication is, as you will have realized from the publisher information, is that these books are definitely told from the Orthodox beliefs. They are filled with Hebrew words; translated in parenthesis the first time they are used. They are classic books, and I have them in my Conservative Synagogue library, but they not meet your needs. (The kids would learn a lot, though!)
