Evi's point about a tutorial on importing records from the Avi Chai Union Catalog using Z39.50 is well taken.
In addition to the union catalog, the Avi Chai Bookshelf libraries have also created a wiki focusing on Jewish school libraries. It's available at http://jewishschoollibraries.pbwiki.com/ If you go to the section on Cataloging and Automation, there's a document with instructions on how to import records. It was written for the Avi Chai schools using OPALS, so the first instruction about logging in is not germane to other people. If you are not one of the Avi Chai schools, the following information will allow other z39.50 search clients to connect to the Avi Chai collection. Host Name : avichai.calypso.scoolaid.net Port : 210 Database Name : avichai Syntax : USMARC Encoding : UTF8 Also, at the AJL convention last year, there was a presentation on OPALS made that we videotaped and put up on Google videos. It's available at http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8315078644843294763&q=Avi+Chai+Bookshelf&ei=u45GSJDQBoai-QHk_ryZDA&hl=en In part of that presentation, there is a demonstration of how to import records from OPALS. Finally, Harry Chan, the president of OPALS, will be in Cleveland this year, so convention attendees will have a chance to talk to him. This is just a start. I hope that we'll be able to produce more materials geared specifically for the broader Jewish library audience.
