Involuntary

Documentary, 72 min., 2007 - New Release

A Film by Boaz Rosenberg

In the late 1800's the French Neurologist Gilles de la Tourette first
diagnosed patients who had multiple physical and vocal tics.
In Israel at the turn of the 21st century we meet a young woman and a
teenager who are living and coping with Tourette Syndrome. Boaz
Rosenberg's sensitive and probing documentary Involuntary is an
essential piece for exposing and understanding what it's like living
with a disorder. Alin and Shani are two very different young women,
from very different family backgrounds. But what binds them together
is a bond of pain and misunderstanding. The two deal with an array of
regular, every day issues that are made intense and sharper as a
result of their condition.
Involuntary is an important film which serves to enhance and deepen
our understanding of a life which is isolating and different. Dr.
Joop de Meijers, chair of the Clinical Psychology department at
Hebrew University has said: "Involuntary refrained from
psychologizing the story of the two women and has opted instead for
sharing with us their daily life, their struggles, pain, suffering
and joy that is an integral part of living. The film shows that and
how it is possible to live with a very debilitating condition"
Involuntary is a recommended teaching tool for students of medicine
and psychology. In addition, students of social work will also
benefit from the sensitive and personal approach of the film which
follows Shani and Alin for three years. Rosenberg's access to the
women and their environments is extraordinary. Without giving
answers, Involuntary manages to raise questions and provoke issues
that are central to the study of "the other" in society. Dr. Joop de
Meijers, chair of the Clinical Psychology department at Hebrew
University advises: "I recommend this film to a wide audience of both
lay people and professionals … the film teaches us a lesson in
courage and optimism, and the possibility of happiness in the shadow
of suffering."
