Thanks to everyone who sent me the source of the quotation I asked about.
Here it is:
The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations, 3rd ed.
D. H. Lawrence, Studies in Classic American Literature (1924), ch. 1
"Never trust the artist. Trust the tale. The proper function of a critic
is to save the tale from the artist who created it."
When I learned storytelling, I was taught to "trust not the teller but the
tale." I think this is just a version of what Lawrence wrote but will do
more investigating to be sure.
