Mira Rocca is the daughter of the author Violette Shamash, born
during the blackest month the Jews suffered in Baghdad during WWII.
Violette, her husband and young family fled the land of their
forefathers in 1941 and settled first in India, then Palestine and
Cyprus, finally finding refuge in London where Violette passed away
two years ago. It was the moment the idea for the book was born. Long
before the days of email and internet, Mira encouraged her mother to
write down scraps of information - which she did over a period of
more than 20 years. It proved to be a fountain of wonderful
recollections of a lost era, and a compelling narrative of life in
the Jewish community of Baghdad from Ottoman times until 1941.

Mira has worked for the US embassies in Israel and London. She held
an executive post with a major British tour operator before starting
her own retail travel agency.

Tony Rocca spent more than 20 years in London as a staff writer with
the Daily Mail and the Sunday Times, with a brief spell in New York
as US correspondent, before turning freelance and writing for most
British national newspapers as well as The New York Times, Reader's
Digest, and Travel Holiday, where he was once European Editor
