One of the most gifted and remarkable Yiddish poets of the former Soviet Union, he was renowned in his day in Russia and throughout the Yiddish-speaking world. He produced forty works, including poetry, novels and plays, many of which were translated into Russian. Peretz Markish was born in 1895 in Volhynia, Ukraine and was executed in 1952 in Stalin's purge of Jewish writers. Despite attempts to categorize him as a "modernist," "expressionist," "naturalist," or "Symbolist," his style was strikingly unique. The book is published with the original Yiddish text and English translations on facing pages.
