Sorry I haven't replied until now. The Breadwinner trilogy: The Breadwinner, Parvana's Journey, and Mud City, by Deborah Ellis (interest level 5-8) is an outstanding depiction of life in Afghanistan after the Taliban seizes power.
An unfortunately out-of-print title, Sun Inside Rain by M. Bassara, is a Jewish novel for teens and adults that skillfully addresses the issues of South African Apartheid. Clay Marble by Minfong Ho (IL 5-9) is a moving novel set in Cambodia during the late 1970s, and describes the realities of living in a refugee camp.
