According to Jewish tradition the sun has a 28 year cycle. At
the beginning of this cycle a special blessing ("Birkat ha-hamma") is
said. This event will take place this year on Erev Pessah (14 Nissan,
April 8th). The previous occasion for Birkat ha-hamma was in 1981 and
the next occasion will be only in the year 2037.

While the blessing itself ('oseh ma-ase bereshit' - 'who makes the 
works of creation') is not unique to this occasion, it has been 
customary to observe this rare event in public gatherings, and by 
reciting various additional prayers and readings before and after the blessing.

On the occasion of Birkat ha-hamma this year, the National Library of 
Israel has assembled a virtual exhibit of manuscripts, books, 
pamphlets and posters connected with this event.
