My best to all three new members of the committee and thanks to those going off. Those of us in in Cleveland's AJL chapter are especially happy to see that one of our members, Aimee Lurie, is on the committee because Cleveland has always had an important presence on it, with not only members but several chairs.
It's a professionally rewarding but also challenging job to read lots of books and decide which of them are of Jewish content and which, by critical standards, are of literary/artistic distinction. As a former committee chair, I know how tempting it is for committee members to confuse good books with likable authors and I hope the committee will remember to focus on the writing and on genuinely Jewish content.
