I received this from Frank's colleagues at Columbia University.

With great sadness I convey the news that Frank Unlandherm

passed away yesterday afternoon. Frank began working at

Columbia University Libraries in 1965, after earning a

degree in Near East Studies from Princeton, traveling and

studying in London and the Middle East. He earned an MLS at

Columbia in 1967. Starting as a cataloger and acquisitions

assistant, Frank became the Middle East Bibliographer in

1969, adding Jewish Studies to his portfolio in 1993. After

retiring in 2004, Frank came back to work part time to help

us with the Jewish Studies collections.

Frank was tireless in his efforts to build strong and

comprehensive collections from and about the Middle East.

Just prior to his retirement he developed the collections in

the Islamic Studies Reading Room in Butler Library. He

assembled one of the first portals for Middle East-related

websites at the dawn of the internet age. He leaves a

distinguished and valuable legacy in all the books and bytes

he curated for faculty, students and scholars at Columbia

and beyond.

We remember him as a cheerful and friendly colleague, never

too shy to ask another selector to pay for one of his books.

His travel and cruise stories were legendary as were his

love a good meal and shopping on eBay. He will be greatly

missed.

To honor Frank's wishes, his family and the libraries are hosting a
gathering at V&T Pizza this coming Sunday, Nov. 22nd. It will be an
open house and folks are welcome to stop by any time between 1:00pm
and 4:00pm. We will be in the back room of the restaurant. Any
colleagues from JTS who wish to attend and remember Frank are most welcome.

The Middle East Librarian Association has been discussing the
development of a scholarship to honor Frank and recognize
achievements in this field. I'll be happy to forward this
information to you when available.
