Involuntary

Israel, 2007, 72 min.
A Film by Boaz Rosenberg

the challenges and difficulties of living with a disorder

In the late 1800's the French Neurologist Gilles de la Tourette first
diagnosed patients who had multiple physical and vocal tics.
In Israel at the turn of the 21st century we meet two young women who are
living and coping with Tourette Syndrome in Boaz Rosenberg's sensitive and
probing documentary Involuntary.

Recently reviewed in Video Librarian, Involuntary received the status of
"highly recommended". In the review P. Hall writes that "Involuntary
presents a powerful, painful, yet also hopeful portrait of a pair of
intelligent, warm, and complex women whose lives and struggles offer
remarkable insight into what it means to live with Tourette Syndrome".

Involuntary is a recommended teaching tool for students of medicine and
psychology. In addition, students of social work will also benefit from the
sensitive and personal approach of the film which follows the two women over
a period of three years. Rosenberg's access to the women and their
environments is extraordinary. Without giving answers, Involuntary manages
to raise questions and provoke issues that are central to the study of "the
other" in society. Dr. Joop de Meijers, chair of the Clinical Psychology
department at Hebrew University advises: "I recommend this film to a wide
audience of both lay people and professionals … the film teaches us a lesson
in courage and optimism, and the possibility of happiness in the shadow of
suffering."
Involuntary is available for the purchase price of $300 for university
libraries and $115 for public libraries. Prices do not include shipping and
handling.
