Judaica Public Services Librarian & Archivist, Philadelphia

The University of Pennsylvania seeks qualified candidates for the 
position of Judaica Public Services Librarian and Archivist, based at 
the Library at the Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies 
(CAJSL:http://www.library.upenn.edu/cajs/ ) and reporting to the 
Schottenstein-Jesselson Curator of Judaica Collections.

Primary responsibilities:

• Provide a range of public services, including research and 
instructional services, such as bibliographical instructions, 
occasional tours for the various constituencies that the CAJSL 
serves, and for the campus communities as a whole.
• Manage the CAJSL archival collections, their physical processing, 
arrangement and description, as well as the accessioning and 
cataloging of unprocessed collections.
• Coordinate external loans.
• Handle on-site cataloging records maintenance.

Additional responsibilities:

• Oversee the day-to-day management of the CAJSL reading room, 
including receiving patrons, guiding them in searching for research 
materials, and offering other forms of reference assistance, such as 
answering inquiries received by mail, phone, fax, or email.
• Serve as the Judaica liaison to public service groups in the Penn Libraries.
• Participate in other projects to enhance and promote access to the 
Library's special collections, such as exhibits, imaging and 
scanning, and other forms of digital utilization of the collections.
• Provide circulation support and other forms of routine document 
delivery services for the CAJSL.

Qualifications:
MLS and two years of experience in an academic research library or 
the equivalent in theory and practice. Advanced Graduate work 
(degrees preferred) in Jewish Studies. Demonstrated ability to read, 
write, type, and speak Hebrew, and read additional Jewish and 
European languages. Experience managing archive and manuscript 
collections and using on-line search systems and software 
applications. Strong planning, management, and supervisory skills. 
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Preferred 
skill and experience in teaching in a research library setting. 
Evidence of initiative and creativity in problem solving. 
Demonstrated ability to work well with a diverse range of 
constituents and otherwise get along with colleagues, faculty, 
students, visiting scholars, and the public.
