Melinda, I love the book The Chicken Man because it is my mother's story only instead of chickens she cared about the kibbutz public area gardens from 1933 to 1950. No one knew better than Mom when to water the flowers and how much water each plant liked :)- Very few kibbutzim today are still living the socialists life. It is possible that by the time that the 2nd graders will be in 8th grade to idea of kibbutz life as described in the book will be a part of the past. It has a historical value as long as kids know the reason for the kibbutz philosophy in the past. It is no longer needed. Amalia
