Andrea, You are asking a valid question. what is the "take-away' that we'd want the children to get from this project? It was a reply to Rachel Lewin on Ha-Safran.. Her Rabbi asked her to create library programs for 3-4 grade. In reply she asked me to suggest books. When I did it the children learned how folk-tales are never told the same way twice. It gave me an opportunity to discuss lesson learned from each story. The feathers story is especially important today b/c you can add the issue of rumors that are spread on the internet .The legends of the brothers, in addition to the idea of caring for the less fortunate, shows another lesson: God chose to instruct King Solomon to build the temple on the exact same place where the brothers met. Could they be YIshmael and Isaac ? Can we relate it to the Arab-Israeli conflict on children level ? That's depends on the teacher. I did not go that far with 3 - 4 grade. They relate better to the idea of caring for a sibling in an unselfish way. If you have the sources of the stories of the Rabbi who tells the man with many children to add an animal each day please email it to Rachel at [email protected] . It is in many collections and is, simply, entertaining. I did not get to go to the library to look (You can guess the reason). I also suggested a scavenger hunt.
