Dear Chevre, As of now, we only have books in English in our K-8 day school library, with the exception of the Judaica shelves. We are thinking of adding a section for Hebrew pleasure reading, on easy reader, elementary, and more advanced levels. The Hebrew Department has at least one hundred books sitting in a resource room, just begging to be read, so the acquisition would cost nothing at this time. We'd like to have this section up and running by the spring of 2011. With my limited space, it will be a challenge to find a spot for these books, but we are planning to be creative and make this work. I will also need to buy a piece of furniture to house them, preferably facing forward, so the covers are easily viewed.
My question for those of you who have Hebrew books in your libraries is how you catalog them. I am currently using Spectrum 5.3, and do not have money to purchase a separate Hebrew cataloging system. The Hebrew chair wants the books to be bar-coded, to prevent loss. I am thinking of just entering the book's title in English, noting that the book is in Hebrew, and adding the author's name. If we separate the three levels, and use some sort of marking system, like a colored dot label, I may also add a location to the record, so that one does not need to go through all three shelves when looking for a particular book. This will work for now, but will it cause a problem in the long-run? Any comments or feedback about this plan would be most appreciated. Kol tuv, Carol Bell -- "I guess there are never enough books."
