Dear Chaya - This is a stretch, so forgive this speculation, for I do not have the tools at hand to carry out this research where I am.
I clearly remember from the mid- or late 1970s (for the HUC-NY was still on West 68th Street), the NY Times ran an Op-Ed piece by Anne Roiphe on being Jewish and loving Christmas. It sparked a firestorm of letters, and if I am not mistaken, it led her to write another piece defending her notion on Jewish identity. My suggestion is to try the NY Times Index.
