El Lissitzky [Lazar Markovich Lissitzky]. "Had Gadya: The Olny Kid. Facsimile of El Lissitzky's Edition of 1919." Los Angeles, Getty Reseach Institute, Getty Publications, 2004. ISBN: 0-89236-744-X. Quarto, glossy illustrated paper covers, xii, internal wraps around the facsimile reproducing the covers in facsimile, 24 pp., color illustrations throughout, inside covers also printed and reproduced here. Softbound. Very Good. Edited by Arnold J. Band. Introduction by Nancy Perloff. "This edition offers not only a facsimile of Lissitzky's lively original, including the rarely seen wraparound cover, but also an introduction to its cultural and artistic contexts, sections on its imagery and polyglot vocabulary, a new English translation of the song from Lissitzky's Yiddish, and lyrics set to music." (From the rear cover.) The high point of Lissitzky's specifically Jewishly oriented work. What is most notable about this body of work is the attraction that Lissitzky had for what was pleasurable in Jewish observance and practice. In addition to the cover illustrations there is a full page color illustration for each of the twelve verses of "Had Gadya," the giddy, rauchous, silly and mystical song that concludes most Haggadot and Seders.
