I am keeping 3 VCR's in our library so our students and teachers can continue to use our large collection of VHS tapes. I don't want to worry about jeopardizing my temple by copying items to another format. I've also (over the objections of a naysayer or two) kept a number of shoebox-type audiocassette players and suggest everyone else do so; they've come in very handy for music tapes, lectures on tape, interviews, etc. that we have. The "counter" feature is a pleasure--where I can rewind to an exact spot on an interview, for example, and then play it for a group. My friends know what a Luddite I am but these these tapes are so much more long-lasting than cd's and especially dvd's, which are used for coasters, frisbees, and what-not, get scratched very easily, and fall between crevices in cars and are never seen again. I've heard librarians say that some dvd's get only one or two circulations! Andrea

"The Jewish Heritage Video Collection (JHVC), conceived and launched by the Charles H. Revson Foundation in 1995, is an innovative video library and series of courses designed to explore Jewish history and culture through film. Its library includes more than 250 outstanding features and documentaries, television and children’s programs with significant Jewish content, many of them not otherwise available to the general public. Its courses, written by leading scholars, examine key topics in Jewish life, from Yiddish culture and the immigrant experience, to American Jewish identity, to the culture and people of Israel. The JHVC is available at more than 200 sites in 39 states and the District of Columbia, including 63 colleges and universities, 57 JCCs, 33 Federations and bureaus of Jewish education, 34 synagogues, and 14 other institutions such as libraries and museums." [quoted from JHVC marketing info] Purchasers of the JHVC signed legal documents concerning circulation and reproduction, among other topics. Has anytone reviewed these documents before embarking on a VHS to DVD conversion project -- or in transferring their JHVC holdings to another institution? Has anyone contacted the Revson Foundation for advice on these matters?
