I trust Karen Armstrong as a reasonably impartial writer on religion. She has several books that might be good for your book group: Islam: A Short History Muhammad: Prophet for Our Time The Battle for God: A History of Fundamentalism The first two are directly on point, while the 3rd is about the nature of religious extremism. I mention this one because I saw a talk she gave -- via CSPAN -- to a group of Muslim women on this topic and I thought she did an amazing job of addressing a difficult topic.
