Linda, Your suggestion could not have come at a better time. As the former co-chair of the accreditation committee and the current chair of the Chapters relations I heard too often about libraries that closed down or librarians whose hours were cut. The leaderships of synagogues, Federations, JCCs, Schools and academic institution see the librarian role as obsolete. Even Rabbis sometimes do not value the librarian’s skills and contribution to the committee. I contacted libraries to remind them to renew the accreditation only to hear that the library is now run by a volunteer or has no funding at all. I had similar replies in conversations with chapter presidents. I would like, as a start, to receive emails from you, telling me how you, as a librarian, make a difference in your Jewish community. I don’t have the tools to make a video, but I believe that your replies can help a talented person in creating this CD that will help a librarian who needs to ask for support from his/her institution. AJL, as an organization, will be able to use it at other Jewish professional conventions as well. There’s nothing like little kids to pull on the heartstrings and the purse strings. Let’s hope that the public library raises the money. Years ago, I suggested that AJL produce a video promoting Jewish libraries. The potential audience would be congregations, federations, foundations, and many other Jewish organizations on the local and national levels. I repeat that suggestion now. Linda R.
