Dear Safranim:

In 2011, the University of Pennsylvania Libraries' Judaica collections received an exceptionally rare gift of a 17th century Holy Land travel manuscript written and illustrated by a Swiss Christian Hebraist. The manuscript was donated by Mr. Benjamin Zucker, a collector, avant-garde writer, and precious gems dealer, in honor of his dear friend Dr. Alfred Moldovan. The Zucker Holy Land Travel manuscript has been transcribed in its entirety (including marginal annotations), its hand-drawn illustrations separately indexed, and a great deal of detective work has gone into identifying the sources of the manuscript. This work was carried out by Anna Baechtold, a visiting scholar from the University of Bern, Switzerland. Our digitization team at the Schoenberg Center for Electronic Text and Image (SCETI), led by Chris Lippa, have scanned the entire manuscript and placed it on-line. The web design work was created by Dennis Mullen and the display of the manuscript includes enhanced functionality.

To view the Zucker manuscript, learn more about the mystery of its origins and identifications, as well as how it came to Penn all can be read on-line at:

http://sceti.library.upenn.edu/zucker/index.cfm .

In particular, for those of you interested in early modern cartography, I would draw your attention to the "digital stitching" Dennis succeeded in carrying out to produce a composite map, created from eighty-five discrete geographical segments of the Land of Israel that are hand-drawn throughout the manuscript:

We hope you enjoy the website we've created to enhance access to the manuscript and welcome any feedback you would like to share.

    Best wishes,

     Arthur
